Since March 31, 2025, all citizens, including those still holding the old-style identity card, can request an early renewal of their document to obtain the CNIe card, in order to dematerialize it on their smartphone. An additional step, which marks a turning point in the digital transition of official documents.
A modernized identity card, accessible to all
Launched in 2021, the CNIe in bank card format has established itself as a more compact, secure solution, adapted to digital uses. Equipped with an electronic chip and a QR code, it allows you to prove your identity online via the France Identité application. Until now, only citizens who had already renewed their expired card or were making a first request could benefit from it. Now, even holders of the old model can renew early to access this digital innovation.
How to apply for the new card?
The procedure is simplified thanks to the National Agency for Secure Documents (ANTS). Simply go to the official website to make a pre-application online, then select “Identity card and/or passport.” Choose the reason “Renewal for digital identity,” then complete the requested information.
Once this step is completed, you will need to make an appointment at the town hall to finalize the application with the usual supporting documents: current card, recent ID photo, proof of address, and pre-application number. Please note, however, that this renewal does not take priority over urgent requests such as initial applications or changes to civil status. Processing times may therefore vary depending on the municipality.
Dedigitalization: your card on your smartphone
Once you have obtained your new national identity card, you can dedigitalize it using the France Identité app, available on Android and iOS. This is the whole point of this renewal. This app allows you to integrate the card into your smartphone using NFC technology and use it with compatible services. To activate this feature, simply follow a tutorial integrated into the application after downloading it.
The use of this digital version remains optional: it is entirely possible to use your physical card without scanning it. However, this initiative is part of a broader plan to generalize the use of digital identities in France. Since its launch, more than 1.6 million French people have adopted this system, which allows access to more than 1,400 administrative services via FranceConnect. The transition complies with European eIDAS standards, which guarantee secure electronic interactions.
By facilitating access to the CNIe and simplifying its dematerialization, the government hopes to accelerate the adoption of digital identities while respecting the challenges of security and protection of personal data. A real challenge.
