To log in to the tax website, you will soon need something other than a password. Here's what's going to change.

The tax website, where you declare your income, among other things, will change its login method. A password will no longer be enough; there will be an additional mandatory step.

It's a mandatory annual event that some would like to do without. Right now, millions of French taxpayers are being asked to log on to the website impots.gouv.fr to declare their income for 2024. The form was inaccessible on the day the procedure opened, but now there should be no problem. Getting to your personal space is not complicated: you enter your tax number then your password and that's it.

However, the process will change slightly in a few months. It will be a little more restrictive, but it's for your own good: this summer, the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) will make it mandatory to use two-factor authentication to log in to the tax website. This method, which was previously optional, strengthens the security of our digital accounts. If you're not familiar with it, let's see how it works.

Here's how you'll soon need to log in to the tax website

In concrete terms, when you log in to the tax office, you'll receive an email at the address associated with your account. Inside is a code to 6 or 8 digits, unique and valid for a few minutes, which must be entered in the box provided for this purpose to access your space.

The operation will therefore have to be repeated each time you log in. The goal is to avoid unauthorized access as much as possible. Obviously, this means that your mailbox must be well protected. If a hacker can open it, they will also retrieve the code sent by the tax authorities.

Note that it will always be possible to identify yourself with FranceConnect if you wish. You will therefore be able to use your login details from partner sites like La Poste or Ameli to access the tax site. Remember that you have until May 22, 2025 at the earliest and until June 5, 2025 at the latest, depending on your department of residence, to declare your income online.
