The price of gas will soar in April 2025

From April 1, 2025, French households will face a new increase in gas prices, with a 2.27% increase. This increase marks a historic high for the cost of this energy, which continues to weigh heavily on budgets, after six consecutive months of increases.

According to the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for gas-heated homes will now reach €0.1241. For those using gas only for hot water or cooking, the rate will rise to 0.1531€ per kWh, an increase of 1.76%. These new prices mainly concern households that have subscribed to an indexed offer, which allows them to benefit from a reduction compared to regulated tariffs, but exposes consumers to market fluctuations.

Some households spared

On the other hand, French people who have opted for a fixed-price offer will not be impacted by this increase. Annual subscriptions also remain unchanged: 277.42€ for households heated by gas and 114.30€ for households heated by gas. for those using gas only for cooking or hot water.

The energy market in Europe remains extremely volatile. Several factors explain this new increase. According to Selectra, a household consuming 10,000 kWh per year saw its bill increase by nearly 99.4% between 2021 and 2025. Faced with Due to this instability, many consumers are considering opting for a fixed-price offer. However, while these offers guarantee protection against future price increases, they do not allow consumers to take advantage of potential market declines.

VAT further increases the bill

From August 1, 2025, VAT on all energy subscriptions (gas and electricity) will increase from 5.5% to 20%, following the 2025 budget vote. This measure risks further increasing the bills of French consumers, including those who have opted for a fixed-price offer. This promises a new increase, and record levels in France for gas prices. While some are hoping for occasional decreases in the coming months, the tax reform planned for August could cancel out these gains and make access to essential energy even more difficult.

Gas prices are not the only thing to change in April. In addition to the switch to daylight saving time, civil servants saw their compensation decrease during their sick leave, while the conditions for accessing the Zero-Rate Loan (PTZ) were expanded. At the same time, there has also been a significant increase in notary fees in certain departments, as well as the revaluation of several social benefits to cope with inflation.
