Tesla is lowering the price of its Model Y in the United States. A simpler version replaces the Launch Series, and it costs much less.

Tesla Model Y loses more than €10,000 in the United States, sales soon here?

The Tesla Model Y remains one of the most popular electric SUVs in the world. It was even, for a time, the best-selling car of all categories. But the manufacturer is going through a more complicated period: sales are slowing, competition is intensifying, and many drivers are turning to other brands. Faced with this situation, the American brand is reviewing its pricing strategy and is now offering a more affordable model.

Tesla has removed the “Launch Series” version from its American website, which had a price of $59,990 (around €56,000 excluding taxes). It included several options, such as the FSD system, a vegan suede interior, and specific badges. It has now been replaced by a Long Range version with all-wheel drive, offered at $48,990 (about €45,800 excluding taxes). This represents a net decrease of $11,000, or about €10,300. With the $7,500 federal tax credit, the Model Y can even drop to $41,490 (about 38,800 euros), for those eligible.

Tesla makes the Model Y more accessible with some concessions on options

This more affordable version does not include autonomous driving. Buyers will have to add it for $8,000 (about 7,500 euros), or opt for a monthly subscription. Performance is also slightly revised down: 0 to 100 km/h goes from 4.1 to 4.6 seconds. The range remains unchanged at 527 km according to the EPA estimate, unless you choose the 20-inch rims, which reduce it to 488 km. The other options offered remain classic: a $1,000 towbar, all-weather floor mats, or even $500 roof racks.

In Europe, this price drop does not apply for now, but it could quickly have an indirect effect. To remain competitive, Tesla could readjust its European prices, particularly in France where the Model Y Dual Motor Long Range is still offered at 52,990 euros. With increasingly aggressive competition from Hyundai, Kia, and especially the Chinese BYD, the brand doesn't really have a choice. Making its electric SUV more accessible now seems a necessity.
