We've known for some time now that Tom Holland will indeed return as Peter Parker in a fourth Spider-Man film. Story, casting, release date, you'll find everything we know so far about the next Marvel movie.
After making his big screen debut in Sam Raimi's now-cult trilogy, Spider-Man had a mixed second life in the two-part The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield in the title role.
It took until 2016, the MCU and Captain America Civil War to discover the spider-man in the shoes of a young, unknown actor: Tom Holland. In just a few films, the British actor has established his style with the general public and allowed the character to reclaim his place as a core figure in the Marvel stable. To give you an idea, his last solo adventure, Spider-Man No Way Home, earned almost $2 billion at the global box office. That's the 7th biggest box office hit in cinema history, no less.
It was then obvious that Sony Pictures (the Spider-Man license holder) and Marvel Studios were not going to stop there and announce a fourth Spider-Man film with Tom Holland. In this article, we will take stock of what we know so far about this new feature film: release date, cast, director, story. Of course, this file will be regularly updated.
Spider-Man Brand New Day took a long time to be made official
After numerous rumors and rumors, the start of what was then called Spider-Man 4 was confirmed only at the end of 2024. Since the release of No Way Home in 2021, Tom Holland has repeatedly expressed his desire to don the costume again, provided he does something diametrically different. “If we get the chance to continue the story of these characters, it will be a different version. It won't be the Homecoming trilogy anymore. We would try to build something different with the tone of the films,” he said in the columns of Entertainment Weekly in October 2021.
Who will direct the film?
While we expected to see Jon Watts behind the camera for this fourth installment, the director of the first three episodes will ultimately give way to another filmmaker. Indeed, we will finally find Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm of this new film. The 45-year-old American director, producer, editor, and screenwriter has previously worked at Marvel. He is responsible for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a new hero introduced in Phase IV of the MCU.
What is the movie's release date?
Initially, Sony and Marvel confirmed the release date of the new Spider-Man at the launch of Venom 3. Spider-Man 4 was thus scheduled to hit theaters on July 24, 2026 in the United States. Logically, French viewers were supposed to be able to see the film two days early, on July 22.
But when it came time to announce the film's official name in early 2025, we realized that the date had been pushed back a week. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in the United States on July 31, 2026, and therefore on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 in France.
Be aware that this release date is not insignificant. The reason is that the film will be released only two months after Avengers Doomsday, expected in May 2026. It's clear that Marvel is trying to resume its strategy implemented in 2019. As a reminder, Spider-Man Far From Home was released at the time only two months after Avengers Endgame.
Barring any unpleasant surprises, this schedule should therefore remain the same. During an appearance on Jimmy Fallon's talk show in October 2024, Tom Holland reassured: "It's happening. Next summer, we start shooting. Everything is ready. We're almost there. Super exciting. Yeah, I can't wait," he said.
What will Spider-Man Brand New Day be about?
As you might expect, nothing official has been released yet about the story of Spider-Man Brand New Day. Before discussing some theories, it's worth reviewing the hero's situation after the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. So if you still don't have the film, beware of spoilers!
At the end of No Way Home, Peter Parker makes an irrevocable decision to restore balance to the multiverse and protect his loved ones. Suffice to say, it's a heavy sacrifice, since everyone will forget his existence. In this new version of Earth, Peter Parker is nobody, whether in the eyes of the Avengers, MJ or even Ned, his best friend.
As a final sequence, we saw our hero, alone in his new apartment (which looks exactly like Tobey McGuire's in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movies), before seeing him take to the streets of New York with a new costume.
So what can we expect in this Spider-Man Brand New Day? Several theories are available to us. The film's story could firstly be part of the continuity of Avengers: Doomsday. In fact, we could see Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. face off on the big screen, the actor having decided to return to the MCU as the big villain Dr. Doom, and not Iron Man as was expected.
Conversely, the film could instead distance itself from the narrative arc of the next Avengers, and offer a total reboot of the character. We could therefore have the right to a plot focused solely on the fight led by Peter Parker against the New York underworld.
Who knows, our hero could cross paths with other emblematic heroes of the Big Apple, like Daredevil, She-Hulk or even the Punisher. The Kingpin could also be one of the main antagonists.
Note that the film could also mark the debut of Miles Morales in the MCU, something that was recently confirmed by Kevin Feige himself. Regardless, Tom Holland said he was "excited" about the film's plot, which should reassure fans.
At the end of 2024, the film's producer, Amy Pascal, said something that points to an existing plot in the comics. Spider-Man Brand New Day could be an adaptation of the Spider-24/7 story arc, in which Peter Parker devotes himself entirely to his superhero career to the detriment of his life as an ordinary human.
Who will be in the cast of Spider-Man Brand New Day?
Aside from the certain presence of Tom Holland in the role of Spider-Man, the rest of the cast remains a mystery. However, we know thanks to an interview given by Tom Holland that Zendaya (MJ) discovered the script for the next film alongside him, which suggests that she will participate in the project. Regarding Jacob Batalon (Ned), nothing is certain for the moment. The same goes for J.K. Simmons, whom we hope to see again as J. Jonah Jameson.
