Since the Wii, Nintendo no longer plays in the same league as the other console makers: while Microsoft and Sony are battling it out on the field of performance and graphic fidelity, Nintendo has chosen a different path by focusing first and foremost on gameplay and fun. With some success, in fact, the Switch is close to challenging the PS2 for the title of best-selling console of all time.
Power worthy of a Switch Pro
The Switch 2 logically follows in the same vein, while still keeping up with the times... or almost. While the screen diagonal is indeed larger (7.9 inches, instead of the 6.2 inches of the Switch 1 and the 7 inches of the Switch OLED), Nintendo has opted for LCD - with a frame rate of up to 120 images/second. This may disappoint fans of high-contrast OLED screens with deep blacks.
They may be able to reassure themselves by taking a look at what modern LCD screens are capable of producing in terms of image quality, like the excellent quality panel of Sony's PlayStation Portal. We bet that Nintendo will launch a new OLED version of its Switch 2 in a year or two… In terms of definition, the Switch 2 finally goes to 1080p, instead of the 720p of previous models.
Nintendo has also confirmed the console's storage: you can save 256 GB of games, compared to 32 GB on the Switch LCD and 64 GB for the Switch OLED. Fortunately, a microSD Express card slot (faster) is still present, and of course it is still possible to insert physical cartridges, including those from the first generation of Switch. The console also adds an additional USB-C port, this time on the top edge. It will allow you to connect accessories like the new camera for Switch 2, and for charging the console.
We will have to wait a little while before knowing the processor integrated into the device. Since the first Switch, Nintendo has trusted Nvidia and its chip, the Tegra X1, which has evolved little. No doubt that Nvidia is also at work in the Switch 2.
The Switch 2 itself would not be much without its controllers, the famous Joy-Con. Nintendo retains the principle of removable controllers, but rather than the mechanical rails of the first generation, the manufacturer has set its sights on a magnetic system. We'll see how well it holds the controllers in place (we hope!), but anything that keeps them from moving once attached is a good idea. To remove the Joy-Con from the tablet, press the button next to the triggers on the back.
The famous "C" button that has caused so much ink to flow is used to trigger GameChat! Yes, Nintendo invented audio chat... Thanks to the console's integrated microphone, you can talk to your friends during games, without having to use a smartphone. The microphone includes noise reduction technology. Added to this is a GameShare function for sharing your game screen. Nintendo is therefore adding a new accessory, a camera that connects to the top USB-C port. Please note: Games must be GameShare compatible.
To use GameChat, a Switch Online subscription is required, but in its great generosity, Nintendo will offer to test the chat service for free until March 31, 2026.
The Switch 2 comes with a dock for charging and displaying on the television. Good news, you can go up to 4K! And an internal fan helps cool the console. The Switch 2 will be released on June 5.
