Last year, the boss of 20th Century Studios surprised everyone by announcing the return of the Predator franchise to the small and big screen. In 2025, fans of John McTiernan's monster will be spoiled. Dan Trachenberg has been working on not one, but two projects dedicated to the extraterrestrial creature. The director of Prey is set to hit theaters worldwide with Badlands, starring Elle Fanning and which enjoyed a special screening at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last week. The second film, which was supposed to hit Hulu shelves, nevertheless remained particularly mysterious. With no title, no synopsis, and even less a cast, the studio was keeping its effects under wraps. This Wednesday, April 9, a trailer finally lifts the veil on this project.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Predator: Killer of Killers will be an animated anthology revolving around ferocious warriors who will cross paths with the creatures. According to the first images, three eras will be described. In feudal Japan, medieval Scandinavia, and during World War II, Killer of Killers seeks to multiply the points of view and approaches to seduce viewers. We will follow a Ninja in the midst of a fratricidal struggle, a Viking ready to do anything to ensure her daughter's survival, and a soldier in the American army in the midst of conflict. Blood, action scenes, and the promise of fast-paced entertainment were all it took to capture the attention of fans of the franchise. The synopsis leaves little room for doubt: A production at not to be missed?
It must be admitted that this appetizer is rather successful. First of all, the aesthetic of the project is reminiscent of other recent animation successes. It's hard not to see some reminiscences of Spider-Man into the Spider-verse, which combined 3D animation techniques with hand-drawn textures. Arcane, Ninja Turtles or even Puss in Boots, this style has established itself in just a few years as a reference for fans of ambitious animation. This hybrid aesthetic seems to have been put to good use so far.
We'll have to wait until next June to find out for sure. The date is set for June 6 via the Hulu platform in the United States. The French release date is not yet known. We can expect this film to be offered on Disney+ thanks to the Star division. Many Hulu productions are offered in this context in France in the absence of the streaming service owned by the Walt Disney Company in our green lands.
As for Predator: Badlands, whose story also remains very secret, is due to hit French cinemas on November 5. No official image has been presented to spectators, and we don't even know who will play opposite Elle Fanning.
