Video game adaptations are finally popular! We've seen this very clearly in recent years between the colossal success of Super Mario Bros. and the record audience figures for The Last of Us (HBO). This new craze doesn't seem to be dying down anytime soon if we look at the figures for the Minecraft movie. Against all odds, this record has just been smashed by this production by Jared Gess.
The Minecraft movie is a big hit at the box office
After the flop and disappointment that was After the Borderlands movie, some feared the release of the Minecraft adaptation. It must be said that the first images were not reassuring. With the bias of a live-action film, or at least of including real actors in an entirely fictional environment, the concern could only be felt.
It did not fail: released on April 2, the Minecraft movie is very far from having unanimous support. We can even say that the first opinions were a cold shower. The fan service will therefore not have succeeded in convincing. Many even criticize the adaptation of not respecting the very spirit of the Mojang game. However, this did not deter the public, who rushed to the cinemas.
While it failed to win over the critics, the Minecraft film confirms the captivating power of the world's best-selling video game. With films being released on Fridays in cinemas in the United States, the opening weekend is a significant indicator of the success of a feature film. However, this is the biggest launch of the year 2025 to date, with $157 million collected across the Atlantic. This is already more than the Mario movie and its 146 million raised at the start.
Add to that the global figures that are making your head spin. We have reached the 301 million dollars accumulated since April 2 for Minecraft. In less than a week, the film has already raised double what its production cost. That's what we can call "being profitable." If the hype continues, it is well on its way to breaking other records and why not become the video game adaptation that has met the greatest success.
