Gorilla Glass Ceramic: Your next smartphone could survive ten drops in a row

The original iPhone launched in 2007 took Corning to another level. By supplying the durable glass for Apple's first smartphone, the venerable American company, founded in 1851, has established itself throughout the industry—but competition is fierce, and it must constantly innovate to stay in the race.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2, launched in 2022, has established itself in many smartphones. Corning also offers Gorilla Glass Armor, a glass used in particular in Samsung's Galaxy Ultra. The company added a new model to its catalog, Gorilla Glass Ceramic.

This ceramic glass material, transparent of course, improves resistance to drops on rough surfaces compared to competing aluminosilicate glasses, Corning assures. In laboratory tests, Gorilla Glass Ceramic withstood ten consecutive one-meter drops onto "an asphalt-like surface". Aluminosilicate glass generally fails after the first drop.

Corning adds to The list of advantages of this new material includes high resistance to damage from "point contact," as well as long-lasting strength. The first smartphone protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic will be a Motorola model, which will be released in a few months. The glass can also be used in cameras and smartwatches.

If the name Gorilla Glass Ceramic rings a bell, it's because Apple has been using a variant on its iPhones since 2021, the Ceramic Shield. And clearly, no one has complained about the strength and durability of the material.
