More than 80% of French people admit to having already broken their cell phone, and the screen is often at the forefront. Since the iPhone's appearance in 2007, Corning has been working to provide ever more resistant glass for smartphones, and the American firm has just presented its latest innovation. Founded in 1851, Corning knows that innovation remains the key to longevity and presents Gorilla Glass Ceramic. This new glass, which follows Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (2023) and Gorilla Armor (2024), is designed to enhance the durability of smartphone screens. It is particularly intended for entry-level and mid-range models, marking a significant advance in protection.
The unique feature of Gorilla Glass Ceramic lies in its unique composition. Unlike classic Gorilla Glass, which is based on an aluminosilicate glass structure, this new generation integrates ceramic crystals within the glass matrix. This glass-ceramic approach gives the material superior mechanical properties. The addition of ceramic significantly improves the toughness of the glass, making it inherently more resistant to shock and impact, as well as scratches that can occur from contact with sharp or abrasive objects.
A hybrid composition for increased resistance
In laboratory tests conducted by Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic proved its worth by withstanding ten consecutive drops from a height of one meter "onto surfaces imitating asphalt". This performance illustrates the benefits of this technology, and Corning claims that "other aluminosilicate glass generally failed after the first drop." For users, this improved drop resistance also guarantees a screen that will better withstand daily abuse.
The recipe used by the American manufacturer is not new and is very similar to that used on the iPhone. Corning is also behind Ceramic Shield glass, which the brand has Apple has been using this new glass on its iPhones since 2021, which stands out for its level of resistance.
The latest addition to the Gorilla Glass range, Gorilla Glass Ceramic is positioned as a solution for more affordable devices. While high-end Android smartphones are mainly opting for Gorilla Armor 2 (capable of withstanding drops of 2.2 meters onto concrete), Corning is targeting entry-level and mid-range devices. Competition is intensifying in these segments.
Motorola is announced as one of the first partners to adopt this new glass, with integration planned for its upcoming models in the coming months. We can expect integration into the Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra, the brand's next two folding models.
