The Pixel 10 could feature a telephoto lens to improve its zoom. But this would come at the expense of image quality. wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle sensors.

Google would have a funny idea for the camera of its pixel 10

The Pixel 9a is not yet available in France, but the first indiscretions are reaching us about Google's next smartphones, the Pixel 10. Android Authority claims to know the technical specifications of the camera of the upcoming high-end smartphones from the American firm. And the information shared about the Pixel 10 is quite surprising.

According to the media, the Pixel 10 could be equipped with a telephoto lens, a component previously reserved for the Pro models. It would be an 11 MP Samsung ISOCELL 3J1 sensor, whose optical zoom capabilities are unknown. In itself, this is not very strange. Most Android manufacturers offer a telephoto lens on devices that are not the premium ones in their range. But it's the consequence of this integration that we're wondering about.

A degraded wide-angle sensor on the Pixel 10?

Still according to the same source, to equip the Pixel 10 with a telephoto lens, Google would make concessions on the other photo modules. The wide-angle sensor, for example, would not be a Samsung ISOCELL GNV, as on the Pixel 9, but a Samsung ISOCELL GN8, a less powerful lens found on the Pixel 9a. It offers the same definition of 50 MP, but is much smaller: 1/1.95”, compared to 1/1.31” on the Pixel 9 (as well as the Pixel 10 and 10 Pro).

The situation is the same for the ultra-wide angle. The Pixel 10 would be deprived of the Sony IMX858 sensor (48 MP, 1/2.55″) of the Pixel 9 and would opt for the Sony IMX712 (13 MP, 1/3.1″) of the Pixel 9a, less interesting. Remember that smaller sensors have more difficulty capturing light well, which largely influences the quality of the photos. For the gain of the telephoto lens, the user would therefore lose performance on the other two sensors.

If this report is confirmed, Google's strategy raises questions. A telephoto lens is useful for achieving a good zoom level without too much loss of quality. But sacrificing the wide-angle sensor, which is the one we use most often, doesn't seem beneficial. In any case, we're eager to learn more about it.
