One after the other, the talented Japanese studio FromSoftware has released two titles that are relatively different from its usual productions: Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods. Both feature a primarily multiplayer component. The first, coming this May 30th, is intended to be a sort of cooperative Rogue-lite Battle Royale. The second, coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, will offer a PvPvE dynamic, a mix of combat against other players and the environment. Studio director Hidetaka Miyazaki, however, wanted to reassure fans of his previous games.
Petit virage de passage pour FromSoftware, d`s director
In a blog post in a series called "The Creator's Voice," Nintendo invited Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of FromSoftware, to explain the concept behind The Duskbloods. This marks a definite turning point for the studio in many ways. First of all, it will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive coming sometime in 2026. Whether this will be a temporary release or not remains to be seen. But above all, it is, like Nightreign, a game that mixes elements of Player vs. Player and Player vs. Environment in a single game.
"I've always found the PvPvE structure interesting. It allows you to explore a wide range of game design ideas. It also provides an interesting challenge for us in our ability to create challenging enemies. I'm not a big PvP fan myself, and I wanted The Duskbloods to appeal to players like me as well." However, this blend of genres with a multiplayer experience as its focal point was not to the taste of all FromSoftware fans, who appreciate in its games the fact that single-player is at the heart of the experience. Hidetaka Miyazaki had this to say on this subject to reassure them: " Let me clarify one thing. The Duskbloods is indeed an online multiplayer title at its heart. But this in no way means that we have decided to dedicate ourselves exclusively to creating multiplayer games in the future."
" I also remind you that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring has also been announced, and we still actively want to develop primarily single-player games like this, which embrace our more traditional style. Cases like Nightreign and The Duskbloods are therefore a priori only passing experiments for FromSoftware, to the great relief of its fans.
