Daredevil Born Again: Season 1 is over, what does it mean for the future of the MCU?

The first season of Daredevil Born Again has just come to an end, leaving a multitude of questions about the future of the MCU. In this article, we will take stock together of the consequences of the Kingpin's seizure of power.

Daredevil Born Again: Season 1 is over, what does it mean for the future of the MCU?

Like any good fan If you're a Marvel fan, you probably watched the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ with excitement, just like us. Before you go any further, be aware that we're going to happily spoil details of the plot of this first season. So, if you haven't seen everything yet, come back later!

In the latest episode, titled One Way Ticket to Hell, viewers and Matt Murdock were finally able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Bullseye didn't kill Foggy Nelson out of simple revenge, but he's actually another victim of the Fisks' machinations. The couple silenced the lawyer to prevent him from leaking an old document that could have jeopardized the mayor's famous plan to rehabilitate the Red Hook neighborhood.

Fisk being Fisk, he then took advantage of Pointdexter's failed assassination attempt at the gala to declare martial law in the Big Apple and give free rein to his small army of corrupt cops. The mayor then puts the finishing touches to his Machiavellian plan: all vigilantes are now considered criminals and will be hunted down to the last one. For Daredevil and the other heroes, a new era begins. An era marked by secrecy, resistance, and terror.

How Daredevil: Born Again Will Change the MCU

Unlikely, the latest events in Daredevil: Born Again will have a significant impact on the future of part of the MCU. Here, we're going to take a look at the consequences of Fisk's takeover of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Heroes are no longer welcome in New York

As mentioned above, Wilson Fisk has officially declared martial law in New York City. For the residents, this measure was decreed to prevent Benjamin Pointdexter from fleeing after his failed murder attempt. But for Kingpin, it is an opportunity for him to have free rein to expand his power, and above all, to hunt down and eradicate vigilantes with complete impunity. His big plan is martial law, and as long as he can keep the city under this state, he wants to commit as many crimes as possible and get rid of vigilantes. This is part of his goal, which is to eventually extend his influence beyond New York,”assures Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays the Kingpin, in an interview with Variety.

Now considered public enemy number 1, Daredevil, but also all the other defenders of New York like Luke Cage, the Punisher, Iron Fist, Echo, Kate Bishop, Jessica Jones or obviously Spider-Man will have to fight for their survival.

The almost assured return of the Defenders

In the last episode, Daredevil prepares to charge headlong into the wolf's lair in Red Hook Port. Wounded, his chances of survival were slim, if not infinitesimal. It was only thanks to Karen that the Demon of Hell's Kitchen decided to retreat. Matt Murdock is aware that to defeat the Kingpin, he will need an army. As you will have understood, this finale of Daredevil: Born Again leaves the door wide open for the return of the Defenders. As a reminder, this spoof version of the Avengers made in New York notably included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand aka Iron Fist.

Like Matt Murdock, these heroes will also find themselves in the crosshairs of Fisk and his Task Force. Teaming up with Daredevil again would therefore give them an opportunity to unite against the tyrannical mayor of the Big Apple. For Disney, bringing the Defenders back in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again would allow them to properly introduce themselves into the MCU… And in the process, pave the way for possible reboots of their respective series.

A darker and more violent MCU?

Daredevil Born Again: Season 1 is over, what does it mean for the future of the MCU?

Traditionally, and with the exception of rare cases like Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU has never really indulged in crude and exacerbated violence. For Disney, it was important that the canon films/series remain, above all, family entertainment. But Daredevil: Born Again put an end to this state of affairs with brutal fights and horrific deaths worthy of Game of Thrones. We're obviously thinking of Wilson Fisk's skull treatment of Police Commissioner Gallo, which sounds like a small reference to the fatal fate of Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) in GOT.

Consequently, we could expect future MCU productions to adopt a much more mature and adult tone than usual. For now, the company with the big ears perhaps still seems hesitant on this point. Thunderbolts, coming to theaters on May 2, 2025, will only be rated for ages 12 and up. We are therefore far from the +18 rating given to the last episode of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.

A more political MCU?

The MCU has generally relegated politics to the background, and yet, certain official decisions have had a crucial impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We obviously think of the Sokovia Accords, which led to the splitting of the Avengers in Civil War. However, with a Kingpin now at the head of one of the largest American cities, politics could finally have a central place in the MCU's plots. Who knows, Wilson Fisk could cross paths with other politicized characters, like Bucky Barnes. In Captain America: Brave New World, the Winter Soldier announced his intentions to enter politics. We also think of Thunderbolts Ross or Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, to name a few.

Fisk, the other villain of Spider-Man 4

Daredevil Born Again: Season 1 is over, what does it mean for the future of the MCU?

As mentioned above, Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, will inevitably be affected by Mayor Fisk's ban on vigilantes. Like the others, he will be hunted by the Kingpin's Task Force. Consequently, it's hard to see how Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the next installment expected in theaters in July 2026, will avoid this situation. If Fisk isn't the main protagonist of the story, he'll definitely be one of Spider-Man's enemies, one way or another. It would be exciting to see how Peter Parker continues his fight for justice in a city that's now hostile to him. And of course, the film would be the perfect opportunity to integrate Daredevil (and not just Matt Murdock) into the web-slinger's universe.
