After a brief hiatus, OpenAI's new image generator is back—and not just for paid Plus and Pro customers. CEO Sam Altman just announced that the tool is now available to all users, including those who opt for the free version of the tool.
For context, this GPT-4o-based image generator is the direct successor to DALL-E, a standalone model that previously worked in tandem with the Large Language Model (LLM). Now, the company has chosen to focus on the latter's enhanced multimodality (its ability to work with different types of data beyond text), thus making DALL-E more or less redundant.
Goodbye Dall-E, ChatGPT gets an impressive image generator
And the least we can say is that the results have been there. The tool is now capable of generating images with stunning realism. It is particularly effective on tasks that are traditionally very difficult for image generators of this type, especially when it comes to text.
When this feature was first rolled out, social networks were immediately flooded with images recomposed in the characteristic style of Studio Ghibli.
The tool was such a success that the company was forced to delay the release of the public version. Sam Altman even joked that the company's GPUs were "melting" due to this unexpected popularity, which attracted over a million new users to ChatGPT in less than an hour.
With great power comes great responsibility
More broadly, Internet users have had a field day letting their creativity run wild... and sometimes even openly breaking the usage policy. According to TechCrunch, some smart alecks have noticed, for example, that it is possible to generate fake receipts for restaurants — a practice also prohibited by law, as such documents can be used for fraud or tax evasion.
If you are one of those who have been eagerly awaiting the release of the free version, be sure to use it responsibly. According to Techcrunch, the company indicated that the images in question contained metadata that could identify them, so that the company could take legal action against those guilty of such abuses.
