Officially, to set up a new PC running Windows 11, or after reinstalling the operating system, you must connect your Microsoft account. However, it was possible to bypass this thanks to a little trick that Microsoft doesn't look kindly on. To prevent you from circumventing its restrictions, the Redmond company has just modified the latest builds of Windows 11. It has thus removed the script authorizing this manipulation. All is not lost, however.
The end of the OOBE\BYPASSNRO script?
In its ticket blog detailing all the The new features associated with build 26200.5516, which is being offered to members of its Insider program within the developer channel, unveils a new feature that may raise eyebrows.
This BypassNRO script is well known to tinkerers, since it is thanks to it that it is possible to finalize the configuration of a freshly installed Windows 11, without having to connect a Microsoft account, but by creating a local account. Clearly, Microsoft is not keen on this solution and intends to force your hand. That being said, this change would only be a patch that is still fairly easy to bypass.
A more complex workaround, but not impossible
Does the removal of the bypassnro script mean that you no longer have a choice but to connect your Microsoft account to finalize the Windows 11 setup? Not really. Because as our colleagues at Windows Latest report, if this change made by Microsoft does indeed remove the script to bypass the Microsoft account connection, the operation remains entirely possible, but becomes slightly more complex. Because if the script no longer exists, the workaround still works.
When Windows 11 asks to connect to Internet, simply open the Command Prompt using the keyboard shortcut Shift + F10, then enter the following command:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE" /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Concretely, this script creates a new entry in the Windows Registry Editor to be able to use BypassNRO again. After validating this script, the Windows 11 installation wizard should display a screen on which the option "I don't have Internet" is available. Just click on it to be offered the screen allowing you to create a local account.
While these changes will not arrive for all users for a few weeks (or even months), it remains to be seen whether the changes will be implemented in the future. Hopefully, Microsoft won't evolve them further to block this new workaround.
