Microsoft has just rolled out a major update for Windows 11 Notepad, introducing an AI-assisted rewriting feature. This new feature, called "Rewrite", is now available to all users, marking a significant evolution of this historic tool.
The new Rewrite feature in Windows 11 Notepad relies on ChatGPT technology to rephrase content, adjust tone, and change text length according to user preferences. It offers a choice between different writing styles, from formal to humorous to inspirational. Format options also include various structures like paragraphs, lists, and styles suitable for marketing and poetry.
To use Rewrite, simply select the desired text and activate the function via a dedicated button or the shortcut Ctrl + I. The AI then generates three alternative versions of the text, leaving it up to the user to choose the one that suits them best. This integration represents a significant step forward in the evolution of Notepad, traditionally known for its simplicity.

However, access to Rewrite is not free for everyone. It requires a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. Users in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada benefit from a limited number of free credits, but they run out quickly.
It's important to note that Notepad's AI integration is less advanced than Word's Copilot. While the latter can summarize content and structure entire documents, Rewrite focuses on rephrasing sentences and adjusting tone or format. Microsoft likely wants to keep Notepad simple while modernizing it.
For users who prefer to stick with the traditional Notepad experience, Rewrite can be disabled in the app's settings. This option addresses the concerns of those who fear feature overload in this historically minimalist tool. It remains to be seen which tools will benefit from Microsoft's AI next, since the company now wants to use it in everything it does.
