One year after a major redesign of the iPad Pro, Apple is reportedly preparing to upgrade its flagship tablet once again. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this new version, currently being tested, would not bring any aesthetic changes, but would introduce a notable new feature in terms of performance.
Same design, but new chip for the future iPad Pro
Apple is reportedly currently working on several iPad Pro models, identified under the code names J817, J818, J820, and J821. These versions would integrate the future M5 chip, which would be one of the first to exploit this new generation of in-house processor. According to information from Gurman, the tablets would be in an advanced testing stage, and their production could begin as early as the second half of this year.
On the hardware side, no redesign would be on the agenda. The iPad Pro would retain its refined design, the OLED screen launched in 2024, as well as its front camera positioned in landscape mode. This update would therefore be more of a technical evolution than a visual breakthrough, which would confirm Apple's strategy of iterating in small steps on its most successful products.
A broader roadmap for the M5 and M6 chips in sight
The M5 chip would not be reserved for the iPad Pro. Apple also plans to integrate it into its next MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, which, according to rumors, would also not benefit from a new design. The MacBook Pro, however, could undergo a more significant redesign in 2026.
At the same time, Apple is already working on on an even more advanced version of the iPad Pro, this time equipped with an M6 chip. The latter would integrate a 5G modem designed in-house, but this model would not see the light of day before 2027.
