Openai crosses 400 million weekly users and aims for record valuation

The San Francisco-based company is experiencing rapid expansion, driven by the enthusiasm for ChatGPT and its APIs.

OpenAI isn't slowing down. With more than 400 million weekly active users, the company co-founded by Sam Altman continues to dominate the generative artificial intelligence market. This 33% increase since December reflects massive adoption by both individuals and businesses, whose subscriber numbers have doubled in just a few months to reach more than two million.

This momentum, driven by Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's COO, is based on growing demand for ChatGPT and the company's APIs. This success puts OpenAI in a strategic position to finalize its $40 billion fundraising round, with the support of SoftBank Group Corp. and other investors. The goal? To increase the company's valuation to $340 billion, a figure that would place it among the tech giants.

Bursting growth, colossal losses

But this explosion in user numbers comes at a price. The infrastructure required to run models as powerful as GPT-4 represents a massive expenditure in servers and computing power. According to The New York Times, OpenAI could end 2024 with a loss of $5 billion, while its projected revenue is $3.7 billion.

To compensate, OpenAI is exploring several avenues:

  • Aggressive monetization with paid offerings, including ChatGPT Pro, billed ten times more than the second most expensive plan.
  • Massive infrastructure development, notably via Stargate, a project led with Oracle, which plans to invest $500 billion in data centers in the United States.
  • Possibility of an IPO, although Sarah Friar, CFO, has not yet given a specific timeline.

The stated goal is ambitious: $100 billion in annual revenue by 2029. A bet that relies on OpenAI's ability to maintain its technological lead in a rapidly changing sector. Faced with intensifying competition, OpenAI reigns supreme, but for how long? Its rivals are not standing still. Google, Meta, and emerging players like MistralAI in Europe are accelerating the development of competing models. Bpifrance, through its support for MistralAI, is also seeking to create a European AI champion, in order to reduce the Old Continent's dependence on American giants.

In this ultra-competitive landscape, product diversification and continuous model improvement are essential. OpenAI cannot rest on its laurels and must maintain a sustained pace of innovation to maintain its leadership.

A strategic conflict with Elon Musk

The other battle is being fought internally. OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk strongly opposes the company's transformation into a for-profit commercial entity, arguing that it betrays its original mission of open, non-profit research. This dispute has turned legal, with Musk filing a lawsuit against OpenAI in an attempt to halt the move. This tension could impact the company's future and raise ethical questions about the direction generative AI is taking.
