Netflix and Amazon are reportedly in talks to further speed up the media timeline. The time between theatrical release and arrival on both streaming platforms would increase to 12 months.

The media timeline could still change. Remember that behind this expression are the deadlines that each broadcaster must respect before being able to offer a film released in theaters on its service. The platforms have only one goal: to shorten the waiting time as much as possible, by ensuring they are faster than their competitors. Currently, Canal+ is in the lead with only 6 months between theatrical release and the group's channels. Recently, Disney+ obtained a nice reduction by going from 17 to 9 months.

We suspect that the two other major streaming players, Netflix and Prime Video, were not going to sit idly by, especially since they are quite far behind in the race with respective delays of 15 and 17 months. It just so happens that the cinema sector is in negotiations with the American giants. Assuming the talks are successful, the outcome will put the two platforms on an equal footing by forcing them to wait only 12 months.

Netlix and Prime Video could change the media timeline in France

The news is enough to delight subscribers, while making Canal+ grind its teeth. The group has already had trouble digesting the sudden acceleration of Disney+, even if it ultimately did not follow through on its threat to reduce its investments in French cinema. Because that is what it is all about. Netflix and Prime Video will also have to promise to inject money into the industry to get the media timeline changed in their favor.

At this time, we don't know the details of the conversations. We will also have to wait to measure the possible impact of the change on sales of physical media (4 months after the cinema release) and on free television channels (22 months after).
