With iOS 18.4, Apple will allow the default navigation app to be changed, replacing Apple Maps. Google Maps will be the first to take advantage of this opportunity: the latest update to the app enables the option on iPhones running the latest beta of iOS 18.4.
Google Maps or Apple Maps, you choose
In concrete terms, you just need to download the latest version of Google Maps then go to the settings Apps > Default Apps, then select the Navigation submenu.
From now on, simply choose Google Maps instead of Maps. Subsequently, tapping an address in any app will launch Google Maps instead of Apple Maps. This new feature will only be accessible to European iPhone users under the Digital Markets Regulation (DMA).
This Default Apps panel centralizes the settings that allow you to choose your preferred apps: for emails, messaging, calls, and even call screening. For a few days now, you can also select WhatsApp as the default app instead of Phone and instant messaging. Since iOS 18.2, Apple has opened these settings more widely to other default apps in the EU.
