New model 2.5, free gems: Gemini goes up a gear

Google is rapidly evolving its Gemini AI assistant. The company is now making Gems, these customizable AI agents, available for free. At the same time, it is launching Gemini 2.5, a boosted model reserved for advanced users and developers.

Gemini Gems are now free, to create your personal AI assistant

Previously reserved for paid subscribers, Gems are now available to all Gemini users on Android and iOS. These modules are customized variations of AI, which you can configure according to your needs: tone, length of responses, specific tasks to automate, etc.

Google offers five predefined Gems to get started:

  • Brainstorming Assistant, to generate original ideas;
  • Career Guide, to develop a structured career plan;
  • Coding Partner, to receive assistance with programming;
  • Learning Coach, to progress in learning new concepts;
  • Writing Assistant, to perfect your writing.

But the real fun is creating your own Gems. Simply write a paragraph describing your goals, and Gemini will generate an instruction sheet with sections such as "Goals" and "Behavior Rules." You can also import files to enrich your assistant's knowledge base.

While they can be used via the mobile app, Gem creation is reserved for the web version at gemini.google.com. Once created, they are available in the mobile interface via the Gem management menu.

Gemini 2.5: the smartest AI model ever offered by Google

Google is simultaneously rolling out Gemini 2.5, an experimental version of its AI model reserved for developers and Gemini Advanced subscribers. Touted as the most sophisticated reasoning model ever designed by the company, it already succeeds Gemini 2.0, launched in December.

Gemini 2.5 Pro, the first version of this generation, benefits from a context window of one million tokens, with a planned extension up to two million. This means it can analyze very long documents or conversations without losing the thread. AI is able to "reason" before responding, a feature already seen in the Flash Thinking version of Gemini 2.0. According to Google, this new model outperforms its competitors in demanding areas such as mathematics, science, and logic.

Special emphasis has been placed on programming: Gemini 2.5 is said to be able to generate visually sophisticated web applications or more complex code. A demonstration has also been published in which the AI designs the famous Google dinosaur game, from a simple descriptive text.

Available in AI Studio and on the Gemini app for Advanced subscribers, Gemini 2.5 can be selected from the template menu, on desktop or mobile.
