Kindle: Turn the pages without touching the screen, the (almost) good idea of Amazon

Amazon is introducing a long-awaited feature in its latest Kindle update. With a simple double-tap on the chassis or back of the device, it becomes possible to turn pages… at least in one direction. This firmware version 5.18.1 has another significant improvement in store for readers who use the brand's e-readers.

No more need to touch the screen to turn pages on Kindle

With the 5.18.1 update, available on Kindles from 10,7497 For the next generation and beyond, Amazon is offering a new gesture: a double tap on the frame or the back of the e-reader to move to the next page. This interaction likely relies on the device's accelerometer, which can sense movement without direct contact with the screen. It's reminiscent of the old physical buttons found on models like the Kindle Oasis, which some die-hard fans still miss.

But the option has its limits. Tapping only works to move forward. It's therefore impossible to go back without touching the screen. Technical choice or hardware constraint? Amazon doesn't provide any further details. The option is enabled by default, but fortunately can be disabled in the settings, in case it becomes annoying.

Automatic summaries so you never lose track of your reading

Another useful new feature: "Book series summaries." This feature provides a brief summary previous volumes of a literary saga. It is automatically activated for books already purchased or borrowed, provided they are among the thousands of supported titles, in English for now.

If you are returning to a series after several months, or if the names of certain characters escape you, this reminder will save you from rereading pages or searching the Internet. A well-thought-out feature to revive interest and finally finish a series of books that you may have put on hold for too long. The update is currently being deployed. For those who are more impatient, it is possible to install it manually via the Amazon website.
