In his last speech to Congress, US President Donald Trump called for the implementation of the Star Wars project. Be careful, it's not at all what you imagine.
Will Star Wars take place? Let's stop you right there: we're not talking about the Force or the Death Star here, but about an American project called the Strategic Defense Initiative. It was the media who gave it the much more evocative name of “Star Wars“.
Launched in 1983 by Ronald Reagan, then President of the United States, its objective is to provide the country with a defense system against intercontinental ballistic missiles (Russian at the time) and ballistic missiles launched by submarines.
The “dome” notably uses satellites firing projectiles or lasers to explode threats before they reach American soil. It never saw the light of day, but could become a reality more than 40 years later. In any case, this is the will of Donald Trump who addressed the subject in his address to Congress.
US President Relaunches Star Wars Project
“As Commander in Chief, I am focused on building the most powerful military of the future. As a first step, I am asking Congress to fund a state-of-the-art“Golden Dome” missile shield to protect our country, all made in the United States,” Trump.
He goes on to quote the instigator of the project: “Ronald Reagan wanted to do this a long time ago, but the technology didn't exist, far from it. But today, we have the technology. […] Other countries have it. And the United States should have it, too“.

The re-elect president cites Israel, which has set up its “Iron Dome” to intercept rockets and shells fired at short range. One wonders who Trump fears an attack of this kind from today, since no potential enemy has been mentioned.
The question of financing such a project also remains unresolved. Theoretically, it should be paid for entirely by the reallocation of part of the Defense budget, $50 billion in all. It's up to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to figure out how to do it.
