Do Spotify and Deezer owe you more than € 100 in compensation?

Are you subscribed to Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music or another streaming service on iPhone, via the App Store? Subscriptions via the App Store in most cases involve paying an additional commission to the company. A problem, especially since between 2014 and 2024, Apple forced its developers not to inform their customers that a cheaper subscription was also possible outside the platform.

The firm was also sentenced last year by the European Commission to pay a heavy fine of 1.8 billion euros – for abuse of a dominant position. A consumer association, the CLCV, is now considering a class action to seek compensation for injured subscribers. The latter can therefore hope, in the event of a positive outcome, to easily recover more than a hundred euros if their case allows it.

How to prepare to obtain compensation

Similar legal actions have been successfully brought in several European countries. In Spain, for example, the OCU association estimates the average compensation received by injured subscribers at 109 euros. In France, the procedure must still be launched to be able to result in payments. It is still necessary for subscribers who feel aggrieved to prepare themselves to claim it.

The steps to position yourself favorably are as follows. First, you should check that you have kept all proof of subscription for the period. This can be evidenced by invoices, bank statements, telephone bill statements (if you pay with your telephone number). Or your subscription statements on the App Store.

You must then contact the CLCV association via its website. Joining the association may be necessary to be part of the class action. From there you will have to wait until the procedure is actually launched in court. And remember to come forward when this is the case. In France, more than 100,000 people are affected by this case and could therefore obtain compensation.
