Cyberattack against X: Musk accuses Ukraine, a pro-Palestinian group claims

A major cyberattack hit the social network X on Monday, March 10, rekindling tensions between hacktivism and geopolitical issues. While Elon Musk pointed the finger at Ukrainian origins, a pro-Palestinian collective, Dark Storm Team, claimed responsibility for the operation.

A sudden offensive

On March 10, 2025, thousands of users reported major malfunctions on X. Elon Musk quickly reacted and attributed the outage to a major cyberattack, specifying that initial analyses reveal Ukrainian IP addresses as the likely source.

In cybersecurity, IP address tracing is rarely irrefutable proof. Hackers frequently use advanced cloaking techniques to obscure their true location, making premature accusations risky without a thorough investigation.

In late December 2023, Platform X had already experienced a one-hour outage. More recently, at the end of February, WhatsApp, Meta's messaging app, suffered a global outage.

Dark Storm Team Breaks Silence

As the story grew, a hacktivist group called Dark Storm Team claimed responsibility for the attack via Telegram. This collective, which displays strong support for the Palestinian cause and direct opposition to NATO and Israel, is not at its first outburst.

This claim raises a new question: Was X the victim of an asymmetrical cyberwar waged by non-state actors, or is this a smokescreen concealing other responsibilities?

Companies such as Orange Cyberdefense have been monitoring the actions of Dark Storm Team since 2023. The collective has already distinguished itself by attacks on critical infrastructure, including Los Angeles International Airport and the Port of Haifa in Israel.
