Google is shaking up its schedule and plans to launch Android 16 well ahead of schedule. Unlike previous years, the update will arrive much earlier than expected. A company executive confirmed this advancement at MWC 2025.
Every year, the release of a new version of Android is a key moment for users and smartphone manufacturers. Google typically follows a well-established rhythm, with a rollout that coincides with the presentation of its new Pixels. However, in 2025, the brand is changing its habits and bringing forward the release of Android 16 by several weeks. This upheaval marks an evolution in the way the company develops and stabilizes its operating system.
Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem at Google, has confirmed that the stable version of Android 16 will arrive as early as June. Usually, the update update comes out in August or later, but this time the company has decided to speed up the process. The reason for the change is a new approach to software development that the company has adopted, which aims to improve the speed and reliability of upgrades. This announcement comes as a surprise, as it means that the first compatible smartphones will be able to receive it much earlier than expected.
Google is accelerating the development of Android 16 with a new method
To meet this ambitious schedule, Google has implemented a new development system called “Trunk Stable“. This method allows all teams to work on a single version of the code, facilitating updates and reducing the time needed to stabilize the system. By adopting this approach, the company hopes to limit bugs from the early versions and avoid the delays that sometimes affected older updates. Sameer Samat clarified that the goal is to ensure smoother and more reliable operation from the launch of Android 16.
Android 16 is currently in testing, with several beta versions already released. This new version should include improvements in photo and video, as well as a battery management menu allowing users to better monitor the health of their smartphone. Google plans to reveal all the details at its Google I/O conference, scheduled for May 20, 2025. With this change in strategy, the brand seeks to optimize Android development and ensure a faster and more efficient update for all users.
