Alibaba wants to give emotions to AI: a direct response to Openai?

Artificial intelligence already knows how to analyze text, generate images, and code entire programs. But can it understand what we feel? Alibaba wants to make it a reality. With R1-Omni, its latest model developed by the Tongyi Lab, the Chinese giant aims to go further than simple facial recognition: decoding human emotions from videos.

AI faces the challenge of emotions: a still blurred boundary

Understanding a video is not limited to identifying objects or recognizing a face. Alibaba wants to inject a dose of humanity into machine analysis. R1-Omni doesn't just interpret facial expressions: it cross-references several visual cues, from body language to clothing and the environment. The goal? To associate each detail with a specific emotional state. While emotion recognition isn't a new idea, it has long been lacking in precision. Early computer vision models were considered approximate, even biased. But recent advances in deep learning and natural language processing now make it possible to refine these analyses. With R1-Omni, Alibaba is banking on a more subtle and reliable AI, capable of decoding signals that humans often perceive without even thinking about it.

Alibaba wants to outpace OpenAI

The challenge for Alibaba is clear: to position itself as a global leader in applied artificial intelligence. The announcement of R1-Omni comes in the context of a race for innovation, as OpenAI has just unveiled GPT-4.5. An even more powerful model for interpreting language and understanding user queries.

But Alibaba doesn't want to play on the same field. Rather than improving language, the Chinese firm is betting on emotions. A way to attack where OpenAI has not yet established itself. Another strong strategic choice: offering access to the model for free. This tactic aims to democratize the use of R1-Omni and accelerate its adoption by attracting developers and companies eager to exploit this new technology.

A risky bet? Ethics in the crosshairs

Giving machines the ability to analyze human emotions inevitably raises sensitive questions. Who guarantees that this data will not be used for commercial or security purposes? Can emotions really be standardized? Cultural diversity plays a major role in the interpretation of facial expressions and body language. What is perceived as an emotion in the West may be interpreted differently in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.

Algorithmic biases, already problematic in facial recognition, therefore risk distorting emotional analyses. Poorly calibrated AI could draw erroneous conclusions, with potentially serious consequences in sensitive areas such as recruitment, justice, or surveillance. Alibaba will have to prove that its model is reliable, transparent, and ethical, otherwise it will fuel mistrust.

Open source: an offensive strategy to accelerate innovation

Rather than jealously guarding its model, Alibaba is opting for open source. A choice that may be surprising, but which is part of a well-established strategy: to promote mass adoption and encourage external contributions. By opening its AI to developers and researchers, the Chinese giant hopes to accelerate its improvement and establish itself as a standard in the field.

Behind this collaborative stance lies another ambition: to control the direction this technology takes. By laying the foundations for accessible and modifiable emotional AI, Alibaba could dictate future industry standards, similar to what Meta did with its Llama or Google with TensorFlow.

Towards a more human AI… or a more intrusive one?

If Alibaba succeeds, human-machine interactions could radically change. Imagine a chatbot that adapts its responses based on your mood, a virtual assistant that detects your stress and modulates its tone, or even targeted advertising based on your emotional state. A revolution in sectors such as customer service, healthcare, or marketing.

But enthusiasm must be tempered by increased vigilance. The more AI understands our emotions, the more it can be exploited for persuasion, manipulation, or surveillance. The issue isn't just technological: it's societal and political. Who will have access to this data? Who will control these algorithms?
