2025 will be "the year of the Windows 11 PC renewal," Microsoft said at the opening of CES. Windows 11 was launched three years ago, but the deployment is slow: according to StatCounter, the OS represents a little over a third of the PC market, compared to nearly 63% for Windows 10.
Windows 11 on the march
However, there is fire in the lake: software support for Windows 10 will end on October 14. Then, PCs still equipped with the OS will be permeable to security breaches, unless individuals and businesses subscribe to the (paid) extended support program, Extended Security Updates (ESU).
This is why Microsoft will push very hard this year for the renewal of IT equipment. "Whether your current PC needs an update or has security vulnerabilities that require the latest hardware protections, now is the time to upgrade to a new PC running Windows 11," the publisher insists.
80% of businesses intend to renew their computer hardware by the end of the year, Microsoft recalls based on an IDC study. 70% of consumer users want to upgrade in the next two years. For some consumers, it may not be a light-hearted move, because obviously changing PCs means investing and the budget is sometimes not there.
The publisher wants to believe that AI and security features will attract users to buy new PCs. In fact, one can wonder if consumers are not forced to do so! “We believe Windows 11 arrives at a time when the world needs it most – delivering advanced AI capabilities and modern security benefits that people expect in 2025 and beyond,” the company says.
Manufacturers certainly subscribe to this vision: the PC market, sluggish in recent years, should benefit fully from the forced renewal.
