Accustomed to presenting concepts and other electric cars about to be marketed at CES, BMW decided to surprise its world this year by showing off its new on-board system. Called Panoramic iDrive, it will be integrated into all BMWs marketed from this year onwards, particularly those based on the Neue Klasse platform, the brand's new 100% electric architecture.
This new interface is characterized by the presence of two screens, but if the first could be described as classic insofar as it is a central screen dedicated to infotainment management, the second is on another level. This is an instrumentation screen that extends from one end of the dashboard to the other and can be customized over the entire section in front of the passenger seat.
Moreover, customization is at the heart of this new Panoramic iDrive interface since it is also possible to change the wallpaper of its main display, its widgets and their arrangement on the home screen. In addition to these cosmetic innovations, the new BMW system includes an intelligent voice assistant and a new navigation system that is particularly well-designed in terms of aesthetics.
See you in BMWs from 2025
On the technical side, this interface called Operating System X software is based on Android, which also means that it can be updated regularly. On the other hand, fans of physical buttons will have to mourn this, since everything is now done via the touchscreen, including the air conditioning and music settings. Finally, the Panoramic iDrive can be supplemented with a head-up display, which is an option a priori, which works in tandem with the rest of the system and completes the display in the driver's main line of sight.
Now official, the Panoramic iDrive is waiting to be integrated for good into a production vehicle. While it is not yet known whether this will equip the future iX3, which should be announced later this year, there is no doubt that other vehicles on the Neue Klasse platform will be equipped with it. In the meantime, be patient.
