The mysterious IA device developed by Sam Altman and Jony Ive will not be revealed for several years

The failure of Humane's Ai Pin smart badge and the semi-flop of Rabbit's R1 case have dampened the enthusiasm of start-ups and manufacturers who saw generative artificial intelligence as a technology around which it was possible to design dedicated devices.

A voice-controlled AI device

For the moment at least, this technology seems more at home in products where it is not the main function, such as connected glasses like those from Ray-Ban and Meta, or simply in the form of chatbots or features (writing assistance, intelligent photo editing) in smartphones.

Despite everything, Sam Altman firmly believes in the possibility of a device entirely dedicated to generative AI. The head of OpenAI has been working on it very officially with Jony Ive, the former chief designer at Apple, for several months. While visiting South Korea, the CEO announced in The Elec that he wanted to start developing this product in partnership with several companies, without naming them.

We don’t know what form such a device might take (no doubt Jony Ive has an idea on the matter), but Sam Altman explained that the best way to use generative AI was not by typing requests on the keyboard, but with voice, which is already possible with ChatGPT. A bit like the Ai Pin…?

The CEO of OpenAI also indicated that his company was developing its own chips for this future device. He suggests that this silicon could be used by other terminals. Finally, he warns that we are not likely to see a prototype for several years.
