Since the Galaxy S25 Ultra was announced, the entire press has been repeating over and over how much it looks like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which we also highlighted in our full S25 Ultra review. What if it was actually a good idea? This is what the latest sales figures released by Counterpoint Research suggest.
For the first time in six years, their traditional top 10 of the best-selling smartphones of the year includes a Galaxy S, and even the most expensive of the three, the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
A small feat
We must appreciate the small feat that this represents. Since 2018, there have been two main types of smartphones in the top 10 global sales. The first type is entry-level Android smartphones, or even mid-range, mainly from Samsung, with some incursions from Xiaomi. The second type is iPhones. We often find last year's models on the podium, then those from the current year spread out quietly in the Top 10, with the exception of the iPhone Plus.
This is also what allows Apple to maintain a dominant position in the smartphone market despite its number 2 sales position. If they make fewer sales than Samsung in volume, their best sales are only in premium, ensuring them comfortable margins and profitability.
Several factors can explain this success
In this context, the intrusion of the Galaxy S24 Ultra in seventh place in the ranking is a good signal for Samsung. The Korean giant has not yet reversed course, its best-selling smartphone is after all the Galaxy A15 5G, followed by the A15 4G. But this shows at least that part of its strategy is paying off. Several factors could explain this: the shift towards Galaxy AI, the 7-year update policy or the absence of compromise on the performance of the Ultra since 2023.
