PowerToys will soon be able to transcode your files. This is what Clint Rutkas, one of the people responsible for developing the tools integrated into Microsoft PowerToys, has just revealed on his BlueSky account.
Microsoft's toolkit, which offers many advanced functions for Windows users, will soon be able to convert your audio and video files in just a few clicks from its advanced paste module.
New paste functions integrated into Advanced Paste
To allow you to easily convert your files, Microsoft has decided to integrate its transcoding function directly into Advanced Paste, the advanced paste module of PowerToys. As a reminder, this tool allows you to paste the contents of the Windows clipboard in several formats, depending on your needs. It already allows you to paste plain text, paste as Markdown, JSON, or even as a .txt file. Soon, the Advanced Paste module will also be able to paste your audio and video files in other formats.
In concrete terms, you will be able to activate an option in the Advanced Paste settings to enable the transcoding function. It would thus be possible to transcode audio files to obtain a copy in MP3 format, while you could generate a copy of your videos in MP4 format (with the H.264/AAC codec).
Thus, after copying an audio or video file to the Windows clipboard, you can trigger Advanced Paste via the usual keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Shift + V) to access the options for transcoding your files into another format.
The arrival of such a tool in PowerToys is excellent news. Thanks to it, you will no longer need to install third-party software or go through an online service to quickly convert audio and video files stored locally on your PC. Let's hope that Microsoft does not stop there and offers a variation of this new feature to convert images into various formats on the fly. No date for the availability of this new function, still under development, is known for the moment. You will probably have to be patient before Microsoft finalizes its new feature and integrates it into a future update.
For several months, with each update of its PowerToys, Microsoft has introduced new features. In turn, Microsoft has inaugurated Workspaces, or the enriched contextual menu New+ on Windows 11 and then on Windows 10. A few days ago, the Redmond company also deployed ZoomIt, a very practical tool for annotating your screen in real time during a presentation.
