RTX 5090 and RTX 5080: a resounding success?
Two of the graphics cards in the GeForce RX 50 Series quartet presented at CES 2025 have been on the market since January 30: the GeForce RTX 5090 and GeForce RTX 5080. However, having a large sum to spend on a GPU was not the only criterion for getting this Blackwell generation; you also had to be responsive. Indeed, the offer quickly dried up. Whether at two specialist retailers such as LDLC or TopAchat, or at the more general Amazon, the aforementioned RTXs are out of stock. You will have to be patient, since the supply is not on the agenda.
The rush for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 has of course not been limited to France. As evidenced by the press release published by Newegg just a few hours after the start of purchases. The American retailer mentions "stocks sold out in minutes" due to "unprecedented demand" that apparently made the RTX 50 launch one of the most popular in history.
The fact that NVIDIA now has a monopoly on this segment more than ever doesn't help matters. Furthermore, a quick tour of eBay confirms that the horde of scalpers are not entirely unrelated to this rush. You will find a whole range of RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 sold as "new". But of course at prices much higher than those initially recommended. In the absence of studies on the subject, you are free to see in this speculation a simple consequence, or on the contrary one of the causes, of the shortage.
Restocking will take several days
What will happen in the coming weeks? NVIDIA has not let anything slip. However, a few retailers have dropped snippets of information. This is the case of the British reseller OverclockersUK, one of the largest in the country. Its teams expect new deliveries of RTX 5080 in about two weeks and RTX 5090 in three weeks. However, depending on the model, the restocking window would be up to six weeks for the first of the two aforementioned cards; up to sixteen for the second!
The story is a little different from the Netherlands. An individual claiming to be familiar with the supply chains alleges on Meggeko Forum that Asus TUF and Prime RTX 5080s will be restocking shelves as early as February 7. More RTX arrivals, including the RTX 5090, are expected in the following days.
Overall, however, it appears that Blackwell's very high-end offering will not be very substantial for several weeks (at least until the end of March). By then, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 will have diversified the offering. On AMD's side, the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are also expected before the end of the quarter. Afterwards, just as the release of a Clio certainly does not have much impact on the sales of a Ferrari, it is not absurd to consider that the supply of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will not be directly impacted by the arrival of more accessible GPUs. For the RTX 5070 / RX 9070 on the other hand, shortages would be more likely to divert some customers from their initial choice.
