Apple already has a M5 chip in its pipes

After the M1 chip, the M2 chip, the M3 chip, the M4 chip, it is without much surprise that the first rumors around an M5 chip are starting to appear on the internet. The Korean site ET News reports that Apple began packaging the future chip last month, a process that aims to protect the raw semiconductor in a case, and allow electrical connections with the other components.

The chip party

After the production of the chips by TSMC on large wafers, the packaging is taken care of by specialized subcontractors (ASE in Taiwan, Amkor in the United States, JCET in China). ASE would also be the first to have started the volume production of the basic M5 variant; The M5 Pro, Max and Ultra versions will come later.

These chips engraved at 3 nm (and not 2 nm for cost reasons) would be intended for future iPad Pros to start with. Production of these tablets would begin in the second half of 2025, said analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. We can imagine a launch during the fall. The current models equipped with an M4 chip were launched in spring 2014.

For the future, we should expect MacBook Pros (also at the end of the year, probably) and MacBook Airs in spring 2026. For desktop Macs, the situation is more unclear: the iMac and Mac mini were given a redesign and an M4 chip last October. We are still waiting for news for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, which have remained at more powerful variants of the M2.

The Vision Pro, which has an M2 chip, could also benefit from an M5 for its second generation. The rumor is not yet affirmative about the mixed reality headset, the new version of which would fall between this fall and next spring.
